A Message From the Chief - Minneapolis

The past several days has been extremely troubling time for me as a Police Chief, but more importantly also as a human being. Equally troubled are the men and women of the Putnam Police Department and law enforcement officers across the state. The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is sickening, horrific, and intolerable.  There are no other words to describe it. In modern day policing I ask myself, “How can this have happened?” The avoidable and senseless killing of Mr. Floyd is a deep scar to the law enforcement profession and to the dedicated men and women who protect their communities every day.

As I reflect on the officers’ conduct in Minneapolis, I want our community to know that I and all the members Putnam Police Department condemn their conduct and find it reprehensible. I hold the men and women of the Police Department to the highest standards, myself included. We don’t police that way, we don’t tolerate police brutality! The Putnam Police Department has worked hard to forge strong relationships of trust and legitimacy with the community we “protect and serve.” I pledge to you that we will continue to improve this relationship by holding ourselves accountable to the highest public standards and treating everyone with dignity and respect, we are your “guardians.” Your trust in us is essential and by adhering to our mission of policing our community with professionalism, integrity, and compassion, together we will move forward from this remembering that every life and every incident matters.
